Researchers at UiT The Arctic University of Norway have found a new volcano at Bjørnøya in the Barents Sea. "Seeing an underwater mud eruption in real time reminds me how 'alive' our planet is," says the expedition leader.

“The big finding was that we really have something that’s coming out from a deep pool,” said Steinbach. As the permafrost thaws, it opens up new pathways that allow methane to pass through.

Images of the eruption and the new cone on Klyuchevskaya Sopka was caught by adventurers over two days, the 7th and 8th of March. The height of the cinder cone at its peak has reached almost 60 meters in height, with a base diameter of 101 meters.

The finding is prompting concerns that a new feedback loop that accelerates climate change may have already been triggered.

Russian scientists in the Arctic Ocean said they have discovered the most powerful methane gas fountain ever recorded, highlighting the danger of this greenhouse gas accelerating climate change or causing an oil or gas spill as it erupts from thawing permafrost.
