A resident of Seldovia reported an infestation of worms infesting an area of salmonberry brush and nettle.
Observation by Stephen Payton:
A resident of Seldovia reported an infestation of worms to SVT Environmental. We went to the area to observe the pests with the land owner. The larvae were infesting an area of Salmonberry brush and Nettle but seemed to be causing more damage and staying most isolated to the nettle. The resident was concerned at the rate they were reproducing and spreading.
Comment by Derek Sikes:
These are probably caterpillars of the Milbert's Tortoiseshell Butterfly, which feeds on nettles.
Observation by Stephen Payton:
Yes, we also reached out to UAF's Cooperative Extension Service and they came to the same conclusion. Good news for the land owner.
