A species rarely seen in the Seward area.
Observation by Maile Branson:
Juvenile Elephant Seal, tag number N867. Animal was hauled out in the parking lot of the Seward harbor breakwater. Not usually found in the area.
Halley Werner, with the Alaska Sea Life Center, comments:
A team from the Sea Life center was sent out to check on the seal. Although it is molting, the animal appears healthy. Elephant seals are relatively uncommon in this area, but this seal was relocated out in Resurrection Bay and returned to the beach a second time. Sea Life center staff are monitoring the seal and will relocate it a second time if necessary.
