The lynx population is up this year in Kivalina
Observation: Kivalina normally doesn't have much lynx in the Kivalina area. There has been quite a number of lynx caught this winter. What could possibly cause them to come to our area?
LEO Comment: A good source for information about lynx (Lynx Canadensis) is the species profile available at the website for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. "Lynx inhabit much of Alaska's forested terrain and use a variety of habitats, including spruce and hardwood forests, and both subalpine and successional communities. The best lynx habitat in Alaska occurs where fires or other factors create and maintain a mixture of vegetation types with an abundance of early successional growth. This provides the best habitat for snowshoe hares and other small prey of lynx. A consult on this observation is pending.
