The past couple of years there haven't been a lot to pick.
Observation: This is a year of the salmonberry! They're very plentiful and big. People are able to pick a lot. The past couple of years there haven't been a lot to pick. The blueberries are looking really good and plentiful this year as well. Berries are part of our food. It's part of our culture and lifestyle. Not to mention they're delicious! Victoria Kotongan
LEO says: We have heard similar reports from Nondalton, Levelock, and Nome. So a lot of salmonberry jam in the making. We will share this observation with our partners with the berry survey at USGS and also archive it on our LEO - berry map. An update on the statewide LEO Berry Survey will be presented at the 2013 Alaska Tribal Conference on Environmental Management on November 12 - 15th. There will also be an opportunity for participants to take the survey and where there will also be berry jam tasting event and even a bluegrass jam!
