A Lily (genus Lilium) is Blooming in My Garden

Observation by Richard Chiolero:

This lily is blooming in our garden. It is about 8’ away from the house (so some heat is radiating out from the wall). Temperatures have been dropping into the upper 30s/lower 40s at night. I’ve never had a lily bloom in early October here in AK. The rest of them bloomed in July. It’s weird (but beautiful). All the other plants around it are going dormant.

Garden lilies, (genus Lilium) are lovely, and hardy, additions to home gardens in Southcentral Alaska. Asiatic hybrids are hardy in gardening zones 3-10, which can accommodate temperatures as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Weather data recorded at the Palmer municipal airport indicate that temperatures have been warmer than usual in late September/early October. Warm temperatures, and radiant heat from the house, may have signaled the plant to create another bloom although it may be short lived as temperatures continue to drop. Erica Lujan
