There has been a lack of snow in the Golovin area ever since the January 2014 warm spell.
Observation: This photo was taken next to the Dexter Trading Post at Golovin Alaska. It started snowing later in the evening and we now have 6"+ of new powder snow. The absence of snow did not allow caribou harvest except by two hunting parties, otherwise, families would have been out hunting more often. This required families to rely much more on store-bought food, leaving some with less money to do things that they usually would plan to do when more wild meats are available.

Alaska Dispatch News – (2014-03-04) Nasty, snowless trail dishes out heartache for Jonrowe, other top mushers. Shortly past the confluence of the Dalzell and Pass Fork creeks, about 10 miles from Rohn, the trail climbs up onto a big hill to skirt part of the gorge. A ride through thick forest on the steep descent back down to the creek follows. This can be a difficult segment of trail even in a year with good snow. There was very little snow on that segment last week, and every dog sled that comes down scrapes more and more off the top. It's doubtful there's any now. The trail will get worse for every musher who follows. By Craig Medred
