Dead salmon and whitefish found along the banks of the Yukon River.
Observation by Augusta Edmund:
While attending the Alakanuk City Council's meeting, a concerned resident mentioned while walking alongside the riverbank, he counted 20 chums, 1 king, and 1 whitefish dead with no signs of being caught by a net. There's been report throughout the lower Yukon of dead fish floating in the river throughout the lower Yukon basin all the way up past Mountain Village. The die-off is happening all throughout the lower Yukon. We've been having high temperatures. This is the second year this has happened to the fish all throughout the lower Yukon.
Comments from LEO Editors:
LEO has received several observations in the past week about salmon mortalities in rivers along the western coast, possibly related to warm water temperatures from the recent high temperatures across the state.
These observations are being forwarded to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation.
