Spider Webs Covering Acres of Grasslands

Boating the Noatak River Delta with some staff from Camp Qalhaq and Tim Thomas and Raj Chevan from ANTHC. Stopped to photograph this amazing field covered with a canopy of spiders. No one had seen anything quite like this before.

In another LEO post, Lauren Divine describes unusual webs that look similar to those pictured here. In that instance, we reached out to Derek Sikes, who contacted spider expert Joey Slowik. Joey wrote that the event looked like a mass "ballooning" event. "Ballooning" is the term used when spiders launch themselves in to the air using Earth's magnetic charge. Erica Lujan
