Early fall weather conditions brought on an extreme storm surge in a Norton Sound community.
Observation by Jolene Auliye:
Shaktoolik was one of the villages that was on flood watch. The woodpile on the ocean side nearly hit the houses. There was more erosion towards the old village with the water level very high that some community members were evacuated to the school. Shaktoolik lies between the Shaktoolik River and Bering Sea, surrounding our village on both sides with fresh and salt water.
