5-31-15 Unusual beetle - Goodnews Bay, Alaska, USA
Observation: A weird bug that was found in one of our street here in Goodnews Bay. The beetle was given to me by one of our residents on Sunday, she found it crushed on the road while coming down from the upper part of the village, and found it strange in color and size. She decided to pick it up and pass it on to me. We've never seen this kind of bug and we don't know what kind it is. We would like to know the species type and if the bug is either native or an invasive species of insect that was found in our region of Alaska.
Cooperative Extension Service Consult: Jessie Moan, Statewide IPM Technician writes, "There are several possibilities for what kind of beetle this may be, unfortunately because the specimen is smashed, it is a little harder to tell what it may be based on a photo. Additionally, the glare from the plastic baggie and the general blurriness of the photo make it hard to narrow things down. If you still have the specimen and can take pictures of it outside of the bag, that would be helpful or the actual specimen can be mailed to our office and I can take a look at it. Specimens can be shipped in sturdy containers to Cooperative Extension Service, Attn: Jessie Moan, 1675 C Street, Suite 100, Anchorage, AK 99501." (University of Alaska Fairbanks)
