Discolored marine waters near Haines may be reflective of the extremely high level of algae in southeast waters this month.
Observation by Luke Williams:
Very large algae bloom that covers most of the bay.
Chris Whitehead with the Sitka Tribe of Alaska writes:
Based on the color from the pictures, it may be a Noctiluca bloom (non toxic). But we are also seeing pseudo-nitzschia in samples around SE (Southeast) and in Katchemak Bay. If you can get a net tow and take a look in your scope that would be great. Take pics if you can.
Comments from LEO editors:
The testing of water samples for harmful algal blooms (HABs) is ongoing. Samples collected from Viking Cove in Haines have resulted in a shellfish harvest advisory because of elevated levels. For more information, visit the Alaska Harmful Algal Bloom Network (AHAB) website. The currently available local advisories are available here. Extremely high levels of toxic algae have resulted in shellfish harvest advisorites across southern Alaska this summer. For more information about the health effects of HABs, see the State of Alaska Department of Health, Shellfish Poisoning Resources website. The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services published a health alert on June 26, 2019. The alert can be viewed at this link. Mike Brubaker
