I observed expanses of dead ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) throughout our train ride (Amtrack train 64) between Buffalo and Rochester, NY. during the early afternoon of 2 July 2019, mostly looking out a south-facing window. Apparently, this mortality event is due to the invasive (Asian) beetle---the emerald ash borer (EAB) (Agrilus planipennis)---according to some newspaper articles I read after making this observation. I observed so many dead ash trees during this train ride that I assume this event will significantly transform the terrestrial biological communities of western New York State, and perhaps throughout the range of these Fraxinus species.
