10-20-14 Sleeper shark - Shishmaref, Alaska, USA
Observation: A Sleeper shark (Somniosus pacificus) was mistaken for a seal and harvested near Shishmaref as it was heading out of a coastal lagoon channel back to the sea. Sleeper sharks are known to occur in the Chukchi Sea (Point Hope 1998; Barrow 2001) but sightings are unusual. This shark was kindly donated to the UAF Museum of the North for further documentation and research. Gay Sheffield
