6/17/15 Drought - Anchorage, Alaska, USA
Observation: The drought conditions continue in Southcentral Alaska with record temperatures and very little precipitation. Thunderstorms have brought rainfall in some areas, but also lightening strikes and as a result wildfires throughout the region. It is amazing to look up into the Chugach Mountains and see so little snow. On the west facing slopes, even the gullys are almost bare of snow. This underlines the low water levels in the lakes in Anchorage, and expectations for low stream levels as the melt is almost through and stream flows may have already peaked. I expect we will be seeing more community water shortage around Alaska this summer.
