Observation: Michael Bear communicated that this whale shark (Rhincodon typus) was seen by SIO student Emily Callahan while out with SD Expeditions and she says it is pregnant. Here is the full video of that sighting. A photograph was also reportedly taken by Emily Callahan.
LEO Coordinator comment: It is very rare to see a whale shark (Rhincodon typus) near San Diego. These are normally found in more tropical environments. Warm conditions in the Northeast Pacific in 2015 associated with "the Blob" warm anomaly may explain this sighting, and another near Catalina Island, which was reported on September 15th 2014 by Pete Thomas Outdoors.
