Front page of the Daily News-Miner documents a late blooming rose during a colder than average August.
Observation by Katie Spellman:
I have been saving this newspaper for exactly 2 years on my desk, so I don't forget there are other interesting places to find observations of late blooming plants! Here is an observation from the Fairbanks Daily News-miner with a fall Rosa acicularis bloom on 1st Ave in Fairbanks. I figured this was a better place to archive the observation than on my desk! I love all the studies that go back and look for plant phenology evidence in newspapers, local records, and almanacs from hundreds of years ago. These sources are invaluable records piecing together an important fingerprint of climate change through history. News Miner Photographer is a LEO observer now, too!
Comments from LEO Editors:
This is an interesting post! In many of the other observations about late blooming plants, average temperatures have been on the warm side. In this case, August of 2018 was slightly cooler than normal at .66 degrees Fahrenheit below average. Precipitation during August was very high at 221% of normal.
