Nome was hit by unseasonably warm temperatures and strong winds.

Today, Nome was hit by unseasonably warm (38 degrees Fahrenheit) weather, coupled with strong winds and rain. The snow and ice that we normally have is now melting due to the warm and wet conditions, making it difficult for people to walk or drive around. The wind is also heavy with gusting up to 35 mph or higher today. People are staying inside and driving extra slow to avoid accidents and some businesses have closed due the wet and icy conditions. It is predicted to get up to around 41 F by this afternoon. There is also not much shore ice left – maybe only out to 200 yards, except near the causeway where it tends to build up, and puddles of rainwater on the sea ice.
