Observation: Invasive Russian wild boars (Sus scrofa) have infested the Canadian provinces from Hudson Bay, into British Columbia north to Fort Nelson on the Alaska-Canada highway. This species thrives everywhere, eating anything they can get into their mouths. They can have three litters per year with 6-8 young per litter. It shouldn't be too many years before they're in eastern interior Alaska, Haines area, and maybe Southeast Alaska. Most likely they'll follow the highway into the Yukon, and from there into Alaska via the highway and by following the Yukon river. Visit wildboarcanada.ca. for more recent updates.
LEO Coordinator comment: Wild boars are becomming abundant in BC, and doing damage to the ecosystem, according to one CBC News article. Hunters have also begun to map wild boars, such as on the Wild Boar Canada website.
