Over a month of rain has tranformed Anchorage into a rainforest and revealed the plethora of fungi hiding in our lawns, parks and forests.
Observation by Mike Brubaker:
When I looked out at my lawn on Saturday and say a fairy ring in the deep uncut grass, I realized it was probably a good idea to get out in the woods and do some mushroom hunting. I hiked the trails by Hilltop Ski Area, around Cheney Lake and Kinkaid Park, and was amazed at the number and variety of fungi that are popping up all around the city. I am as tired as anyone of the days of rain, but going into the forest right now to see the super tall devils club and the virtual fungus festival brought some wonder back into an otherwise dreary month. I have never seen, or at least do not recall, ever seeing so many varieties and abundance. I harvested some very fresh bolettes and fried them up in butter with a dash of salt and pepper. Delicious!! These are the best fungi conditions I have seen since another very rainy month, August of 2013. See related post.
