Observation: The amount of weeds in the lake is really increasing. This has been happening over about the past five years. I think it may be caused by the warmer water temperature. People started swimming in the lake this year in June. Usually that does not happen until July. The weeds are a problem because they can clog the intake on an outboard. Once you are up on step it is okay, if you have a jet unit. But you don't want to get into the weeds a slow speed. I think these are weeds that have always been in the lake, rather then invasive weeds. I am wondering about weed control.
Cooperative Extension Service Consult: Gino Graziano, Invasive Plant Instructor writes, "I would love to see pictures of the actual weeds to make sure they aren't an invasive being mistaken for warmer temperatures. Still it is more likely that it is simply the warmer temperatures. Weed control in lakes can be done mechanically for some relief. Chemical control is not an option unless you get a permit from the state, and hire or are a certified pesticide applicator with an aquatic certification."

LEO says: warming conditions can encourage growth of vegetation including lake weeds. See resources below on the impacts of climate change on inland waters, and on management of weeds in lake environments.
