Lots of Late Blooming Roses (Rosa acicularis)

Roses usually bloom in May and June. I have seen them in fall before, but this year, I am hearing reports of them from all over Fairbanks (I am on a Fairbanks Gardening Facebook group). Here is one in my yard.

Air temperature may be one of the factors that signal a plant to bloom later than expected. According to the US Forest Service, Alaskan roses (Rosa acicularis) usually bloom early in the summer and turn to hips during August. However, this time frame may be changing. In the Mean Annual Temperature Departure chart below, we can see that temperatures have been trending warmer since the late 1970s. Temperatures in Fairbanks have been particularly warm this year, with temperatures in late September and early October staying above the normal high temperatures of 35-40 degrees Fahrenheit.
