Marine Birds and a Warming Ocean: Working Together to Witness Change

Description:

Coastal communities are experiencing a changing marine environment, including rising ocean temperatures, shifting fisheries, and increases in disease and toxic algal blooms. Seabirds - occurring in Alaska by the millions - feel these pressures as well. Since 2014, hundreds of thousands of marine birds have washed ashore from the west coast of the U.S. north into the Chukchi Sea, in a series of seven mass mortality events that are unprecedented in frequency, magnitude and spatial scale. In total, millions of birds have died in Alaska alone. This fundamental and alarming shift in the ecosystem is associated with at least three sources of ocean warming: the heatwave in the North Pacific known as "The Blob," an El Niño event, and persistent polar warming in the Arctic. The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team works in partnership with individuals, communities and resource management agencies to document, measure and understand these events. Hillary will share what COASST has learned from these efforts, highlighting important partners like the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Ecosystem Conservation Office, AMBCC, National Park Service and USFWS.
