Fish Found in Stream Where There Are Usually No Fish

Observation by Jerilyn Kelly:

I have never heard of fish in stream in this area. I initially thought that they were unwanted fish that were thrown in the pond, but I noticed that there was also live fish still swimming there.

Jennifer Hooper, Natural Resources Director for the Association of Village Council Presidents, writes:

I did see a post on Facebook last night with pictures – some of the comments spoke to recent storm/flood surges that likely pushed fish into those areas. I don’t know what else it could have been.

The Anchorage Daily News reported that more than 4 inches of rain fell in a single day over some areas of the Seward Peninsula during the rain event over the first weekend in August. LEO contributor Rick Thoman is quoted in the article saying:

The rain mostly came in two shots, with a 16-hour break. The atmosphere had an extremely high moisture content. There was even flooding on the Dalton highway.

It is possible that during the rain and flooding, these fish were washed into a depression on the landscape and were trapped when the flooding receded. Erica Lujan
